Bottled Beer

PALE LAGERS

The pale lager or golden lager is the most widely consumed and commercially available style of beer in the world. Pale lagers tend to be dry, lean, clean and crisp. Hop character ranges from negligible to a slight dry bitterness from noble hops. Some brewers use adjuncts such as corn or rice to lighten the body of their beers. This use of adjuncts is a classic American style that has offered the beer drinker a light, refreshing brew that is accepted the world around. Pair these beers with fried foods or our delicious chicken.

CONTINENTAL STYLE LAGER

This style of pale or golden lager was made famous by the beers of continental Europe. They are brewed with classic European malts and noble hop varieties such as Saaz or Hallertau. These beers stray away from adjunct use and are typically more full flavored as compared to Lagers made in American style. Seafood dishes and our pretzels love these beers.

PILSNER

The pilsner originated in what is now the Czech Republic. Pilsner Urquell is the first known example of a good lager. This brewing technique of using lightly toasted malts and a small amount of noble hops for a dry finish changed the way beers were made in the 1800s. Although the term lager and pilsner are used somewhat interchangeably, in truth, a pilsner should refer to a lager beer that showcases the noble hop aroma and dry finish. Look for tomato based soups and sauces to enjoy with these.

Pilsner Urquell (Czech Republic) $3.50 ABV4.4%

VIENNA STYLE

Traditionally these beers are a reddish brown or copper colored beer characterized by subtle hops, crisp, malty, and bready, with caramelized flavors and some residual sweetness. They pair well with the ale house nachos. Well what did think we were going to say?

Dos Equis (Mexico) $3.50 ABV 4.5%

MARZEN-OKTOBERFEST

“March Beer” – originally brewed in March and tapped in the Fall for Oktoberfest. This beer is bronze and smooth with a round malty flavor ballance. These days, Marzen Lager is brewed all year long and provides a darker, more flavorful Lager experience. Vegetables and most sausages are a perfect match for these. Cheese will not be sad to see this beer either.

Heavy Seas Marzen (MD) $3.50 ABV 5.9%

WHEAT BEER

Wheat beers are brewed with malted wheat in addition to the barley. This style has notes of fruit and a very effervescent nature. Hefe-Weizens are unfiltered and are cloudy with some yeast residue. Witbier-is a Belgian style wheat beer that is hazy, this style is traditionally spiced with coriander and orange peel. Pairs well with fruit flavored dishes and roasted meats

Schneider Aventinus Wheat-Doppelboch (99 Point rating) (Germany) $10 ABV 8.2%
Southampton Double White Ale (NY) $3.50 ABV 6.7%

PALE ALES

Pale ales are gold to amber in color with aromas focusing on the citrus and pine from the northwestern hops. Pale ale has been the centerpiece of the American craft brewing revolution of the past 30 years. These beers are assertive in character, have a wonderful fruit character from the yeasts, and finish with a hoppy dryness. C’mon, all the cool kids are drinkin’ em… pairs well with spicy food, like the Chipotle burger or BBQ. A pale ale won’t leave your pasta dish lonely either.

Sweetwater Blue (Light crisp ale with hints of blueberry) (GA) $3.50 ABV 4.9%
Magic Hat # 9 (Not-Quite Pale Ale with essence of fresh Apricot) (VT) $3.50 ABV 4.6%
Oskar Blue’s Dale’s Pale Ale (CA) $3.50 ABV 6.5%
Sweetwater 420 Extra Pale Ale (GA) $3.50 ABV 5.4%

RYE PALE ALE

Ales in this category have replaced a portion of their barley malts with rye. Although there are a few German examples of this technique, the American style tends to lean on generous late hop additions to accent the slightly spicy and somewhat bready undertones of the rye grain. Pair these with cheese or jerked something. Spice is nice.

Founder’s Reds Rye Pale Ale (MI) $4 ABV 6.8%

INDIA PALE ALE

Falling under the greater category of pale ale, India Pale Ales are deep gold to amber in color and are usually characterized by floral hop aromas with a distinctive hop bitterness on the finish. Originally from Burton, England in the early 1800s when British troops and colonists depended upon supplies of beer shipped from home. Standard ales could not survive the journey, hence brewers developed high gravity, heavily hopped brews that survived shipment to their largest export market, India. Although the British version continues to trend closer to a light session beer, American craft brewers have embraced the assertive style of IPA. Using almost exclusively northwest hop varieties, look for exciting floral hop character on the nose, round delicious malt character, big bold bitter finishes. and a little kick at the end. Hopheads unite here. They eat wings, burgers, and even steak. I heard a rumor that there were vegetarian hop heads too!

Victory Hop Devil IPA (PA) $3.5 ABV 6.7%

BELGIAN & BELGIAN STYLE ALES

Below are some of the very best beers these styles have to offer. Ranging from pale tripels to strong dark ales, these are quite possibly the most complex beers at Pack’s. Belgian beer is a world unto itself. It will remind you of that poster “so many beers, so little time”… pairs well with seafood, salads and lighter fare, like chicken. Have the Three Philosophers with dessert!

Duvel Belgian Strong Pale Ale (Belgium) $9 ABV 8.5%
Chimay Tripel (White) (Belgium) $9 ABV 8.0%
Weyerbacher Merry Monks, Belgian Style Abbey Tripel (PA) $4 ABV 9.3%

Ommegang Three Philosophers Quadrupel (NY) $9 ABV 9.8%

AMERICAN OR AMBER ALES

A modern, non-traditional beer category that serves to catch some of the amber color beers being produced. With no strict style boundaries, these beers can range from light copper to a dark red or light brown color and everywhere in between. These beers tend to appeal to the pale ale drinker who prefers less hops and more malts, although some ambers do have a hoppy finish. Ambers pair well with cheese dips, cob salads, quesadillas, and chicken sandwiches.

Rogue Chipotle Ale (OR) $10 ABV 5.5%
Stone Levitation Amber Ale CA) $4 ABV 4.4%

BROWN ALES

Brown ALes are medium bodied, reddish brown beers with slightly sweet malty tones accented by nutty character and caramel notes. The versions from overseas tend to be more sweet than the brown ale we brew in the US. Brown ale may be the most versatile beer when it come to food pairings. They make a good go-to option.

Dogfish Head Palo Santo Brown Ale (DE) $9 ABV 12.0%
Rogue Hazelnut Brown Nectar Brown Ale (OR) $10 ABV 6.2%
Newcastle Brown Ale (England) $3.50 ABV 4.7%

PORTERS AND STOUTS

Intertwined in their origins, these two styles provide us with some of the darkest ales available. Porters were once used as nourishment for the porters on the docks of London. They were blends of a stale ale. a new brown ale, and a weaker ale for balance. Often aged for 18 months in a cask. The Stout Porter came to be known as a name for the strongest porters.

With the release of the Guinness Stout Porter and an added tax on English malting grains, the Irish stout movement began to sweep export markets by storm, making a case for the stout style. Both beers now use dark roasted barley for the beautiful color and should finish dry and fulfilling. There is argument that there is not really a true difference between the styles beyond brewer’s intent. Let us leave that discussion for another day. Grab some potato skins, fish-n-chips, or a Pack’s Pride and choose one of these fine brews.

Great Divide St. Bridget’s Porter (CO) $3.50 ABV 5.9%
Rogue Chocolate Stout (OR) $10 ABV 6%
