OUR STORY:

Located in Downtown Asheville’s Pack Square Park, the historic Hayes and Hopson Building has stood since 1907, originally built by a local lumber supply company. As demand grew, an additional structure was added in 1912—now home to the main restaurant and bar of Pack’s Tavern.

Before becoming a hotspot for local beer and great eats, this building had a more secretive past. During Prohibition, its basement served as a major moonshine distribution hub, using the lumber business as a front. Liquor was moved discreetly via a side loading dock and an underground tunnel across Eagle Street, keeping the operation hidden for 12 years.

In 1932, Prohibition’s end was in sight. After Franklin D. Roosevelt took office in 1933, beer was quickly legalized, and by December, the 21st Amendment fully repealed the ban on alcohol.

Pack’s Tavern pays tribute to this turning point in history with a 1932 theme, celebrating the end of Prohibition. We invite you to experience the rich history, hospitality, and craft drinks that make Pack’s Tavern a true Asheville landmark.

“First time here. The place is really large inside. They were packed but we still got seated right away. Out waitress was very helpful in recommending items on the menu. We got the double stack burger. It was very good I guess it made like a popular burger from a diner that use to be In Asheville. It comes with cheese and pickles and white creamy sauce. I got the chicken Marsala Mashed potatoes and shaved Brussels sprouts. I will definitely get that again. I loved the Brussel sprouts they were cooked in bacon but were not greasy at all. The chicken was perfectly cooked juicy and had a wonderful charbroiled flavor. We also got the crème brûlée cheese cake with seasonal fruit. Which were strawberries. It was perfect to share after our meal. It was not too sweet. We will definitely be back”

“What a find! Love the old bar feel, with amazing food and many beers on tap (and the old yellow truck out front! ) Great staff, all very friendly and helpful. Highly recommend the bbq brisket on Mac and cheese, and the fish tacos.”

“Great atmosphere, Great food! We came across Pack’s while visiting Asheville and I am so glad that we did! The atmosphere is great and the food was delicious. I got the bison meatloaf and it was seriously one of the best meals I have ever had. Make sure to save room for an adult float! The service was also phenomenal.”
